Police in the Midlands are investigating a series of incidents that have left locals both frustrated and oddly impressed. Over the past three weeks, at least seven summer picnic sites have been relieved of bread rolls, flatbreads, and one particularly ambitious focaccia. The thief strikes quickly, leaves no mess, and has not yet been identified. Authorities are calling the perpetrator the 'Breadbox Bandit,' a title that suggests either genuine menace or the police department's sense of humour—possibly both.
'What's remarkable is the technique,' said Detective Sherlock Bones, a meticulous Beagle from the regional constabulary. 'Most bread-related incidents involve chaos, crumbs, and clear evidence. This one? Clean as a whistle. Almost professional.' Witnesses describe a small, brown dog with excellent timing and an unusual ability to identify unattended baskets. One picnicker reported that the suspect made eye contact, seemed to nod, and simply walked off with an entire sandwich bag as if they'd been invited to share.
Police have advised summer revellers to secure food provisions and remain vigilant. They've also, somewhat unofficially, admitted that anyone who pulls off a heist this skilfully deserves at least a footnote in local history. The Breadbox Bandit remains at large, and somewhere in the Midlands, a very satisfied dachshund is dining like royalty.
